As many as eleven pages of Les Très Riches Heures include views of castles (nine in the Calendar). These castles are all of a certain importance and are, to varying degrees, imposing edifices. What with the wealth of detail with which they are represented, in many cases – indeed, practically all – we can identify these constructions with actually existing buildings. The most spectacular are the Château de Saumur, dominating the month of September with its many castellated or embattled towers, and the Louvre (October), rebuilt by Charles V as a fortress on the banks of the Seine.
